About Walker's Hat Shop

In 1960, my mother, a red-haired fair skinned tennis player was frustrated trying to find a visor that was comfortable, machine washable, and truly provided the best sun protetion. It was soon obvious that such a product did not exist, and Elaine Walker decided to try to design one on her own using her home sewing machine on the kitchen table.

After hundreds of revisions, she finally had a visor that met her criteria. Friends requested that she make visors for them, and a local tennis shop asked her if she could make a dozen for them to sell. Soon shops were ordereing 3 and 4 dozen at a time. Elaine was amazed, as they were priced 5 times as high as other visors, but customers appreciated the quality and orders continued to pour in. In 1962 Ladies Home Journal wrote her up as busineswoman of the year, and Mom bought her first used industrial sewing machine.

By 1975, Mom was so busy making visors that she wasn't able to play as much tennis as she wanted. In late 1975, I took over the business so mom could spend her time like she wanted. I introduced new machinery and hired employees to increase production. Profits were up, but quality (and my pride) suffered.

By 1977 I realized that it was not possible to keep the hand made quality that my customers were paying a premium for in a factory setting. I stopped hiring new employees and for the last three decades every visor and hat has been made by myself and my wife. Of course profits declined, but I have my pride of workmanship back.

It is rare when an item ships that is not perfect as every item we sell is made, inspected, and packed by the family. We regularly receive battered, worn out visors and hats in the mail with the hope that I still make them. Often people have had the visors and hats for well over 20 years.

Our family takes extreme pride in the fact that there are no better visors or hats available, at any price, than Walker's Hat Shop.

What are our visors and hats made of?

We use polyester cotton blend fabric, from 70/30 to 65/35
In between the outer layers are sandwiched two layers of a non-woven fabric, similar to upholstery lining. The outside stiffener is similar to tooth brush material.

Will it fit?

Our visors and hats use a hook and loop fastener similar to Velcro in the back, so they are very adjustable. If you have an unusually large head or are concerned, let us know and we'll make the fastener longer just to be sure! We were the first to use Velcro as a fastener in the early sixty's, but found the quality declined in the early eighty's. We now use another brand which is the very best quality that we can find. One size fits most everyone.

Do you make baseball, western, clip on, or plastic hats?

No, what you see on the website is all that we make. All our visors and hats are proudly made in the United States of America.

Should I order on the web or by phone?

This is completely up to you. If you haven't received a response in a few days, CALL! If you have any questions, or want to clarify a special order, please either call, or include an explanation in the note area of the order form.

How soon will I receive my order

We ship Priority Mail or UPS. Custom orders may take longer, but you will be notified. Federal Express is also available, but at substantially higher cost.

Is your site secure?

YES...We use state-of-the-art, 128-bit encryption, with a SSL and CSR provided by Geotrust. Only the online order form needs to be, and is secure.

Do you sell your customer list or any other information?

NO, NO, NO a thousand times NO!

Can you tell me of a store near me that carries your products?

Sure! Phone toll free and we'll search by city or zip code. If you prefer, drop an email and we'll respond that way.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is $6.90 for the first 2 items ordered, FREE on 3 or more items. (Don't forget you receive a 10% discount when you order six or more items) If you need FedX the charges are substantially higher.

What about sales tax?

Sales tax must be charged for orders shipped anywhere in California. For now, no sales tax will be charged for orders shipped anywhere else, although our legislature is considering changing this.

Three inch, four inch, or five inch brim?

The four inch ladies brim provides the most sun protection for the sides of the face and ears and is our most popular. The five inch provides the most for the nose and cheeks. The three inch provides less protection than the four, and looks smaller.

Can I get terry cloth?

We can put terry cloth in the inside of the band (the part up against your forehead) but we are limited to White, Navy, Brown, Pink, Red, Ecru, Powder, Black, Forest Green, and Lavender. It's nice to match the color to the underside of the brim, but you can always specify white or another color. If you don't specify, you will get a matching color if available, otherwise white terry cloth.

What color(s) should I order?

Of course, this is completely up to you. We can make solid colors, or any combination of colors. (Eg. Pink on top purple on bottom) Here is something to keep in mind however. For maximum sun protection, white on top with any color (the darker the better) underneath is the best. The white will reflect the heat and sun, while the dark color under will absorb rather than reflect back into your eyes. A dark color under is cooler than a light color. However, if you are around dirty conditions, solid colors will show the dirt less than white.
